Coffee is one of Italians’ favorite drinks. Bars are an integral facet of Italian culture and lifestyle, and Viterbo has many amazing ones.
What’s the main difference between Italy and America?
In America, cafes are where you go to drink coffee, grab a snack, maybe sit down and chat with a friend or do some work. You go to bars to drink alcohol. In Italy, caffè just means coffee. In order to get that, you must go to a bar. Bar in Italian encompasses places to get alcohol as well as what we in America consider a cafe.
I walked around Viterbo to try to learn about the best bars
- Bar 103 is located near Fontana grande and at the top of via Cavour. It is a family-run friendly environment, with a large outdoor seating area and a large pastry selection. They are vegetarian friendly and offer vegetarian paninis and vegan muffins. In my opinion, they serve the best cappuccino ginseng in Viterbo!
- Cafe Cavour is also on Via Cavour. It is a cozy environment with friendly staff, and delicious 1 euro chocolate muffins.
- In Piazza Del Comune you’ll find Cafe Centrale. They also offer a lot of seating, both indoor and outdoor, and serve great appertivos. Appertivos are like pre-dinner snacks in Italy, usually consisting of potato chips, peanuts, olives, etc. They are usually accompanied by an alcoholic drink like an Aperol Spritz, but I got mine with just water. They have a large pastry and panini selection and are very conveniently located. They also sell snacks like chips and granola bars.
- Another interesting place is Cafe San Leonardo is near Piazza Del Comune. They have cozy indoor seating and serve delicious cappuccinos.
- Happiness Cafe is located near Via Cavour. They have a friendly staff and a large indoor seating area with lots of interesting decorations. It is a great spot to get a cappuccino and do work.
- Caffeina doubles as a theater and a café. They have an upstairs seating area and comfortable couches. They offer many different food and pastry options. Furthermore, they have a delicious chambellone cake, and it is a great environment to study or do work.
