Gym Culture in America vs Italy: Lifestyle vs. Aesthetics

gym culture

Gym culture is an integral part of the fitness world, and it differs significantly from country to country. One such comparison is between the gym culture in Italy and the United States. While both countries have a fitness-focused population, their approach to gym culture is different in many ways.

American Student’s Experience

I spoke with Jasper, an avid gym goer in America and now also in Italy. He explained the gym culture in Italy is more relaxed compared to America, where it is more competitive. In Italy, people go to the gym to stay fit, but it is not their main priority. They enjoy socializing, spending time with friends, and having a good time while working out. In contrast, the gym culture in America is more intense, with people having a specific workout routine and pushing themselves to their limits. There is more focus on individual performance and achieving personal goals.

What are the Differences?

Jasper also spoke of the difference between the dress codes. In Italy, gym-goers tend to wear more casual clothes like leggings, t-shirts, and sweatpants. However, American gym-goers tend to wear more stylish and fashionable gym clothes, such as designer leggings, crop tops, and trendy sneakers. The athlesure style is much more popular in America.

The role of personal trainers is different in both countries

In Italy, personal trainers are seen as a luxury, and many people do not use them. Instead, they rely on the gym staff to help them with their workouts. In contrast, personal trainers are an essential part of the gym culture in America. Many people hire personal trainers to help them achieve their fitness goals, and they often spend a lot of money on this service. Jasper explained that he does not personally have a trainer, but knows a lot of people in America that do.

The use of steroids in gyms is also a controversial topic in the fitness world, and it differs significantly from country to country. One such comparison is between the use of steroids in gyms in Italy and the United States. Their approach to the use of steroids in gyms is different in many ways.

In Italy, the use of steroids is illegal, and it is not a common practice in gyms. Steroids are classified as performance-enhancing drugs and are only available through a doctor’s prescription. Therefore, most people in Italian gyms rely on natural methods, such as proper diet, exercise, and supplementation to achieve their fitness goals.

In contrast, the use of steroids is more prevalent in American gyms. Steroids are not illegal in the United States, but their use is regulated, and they are only available through a doctor’s prescription. However, many people in American gyms obtain steroids through underground sources or online. This is a dangerous practice as there is no regulation on the quality and purity of the steroids, which can lead to serious health consequences.

The gym culture in Italy and America differs in several ways.

While both countries have a focus on fitness and healthy living, they approach it from different angles. The gym culture in Italy is more relaxed, with an emphasis on socializing and functional training, while the gym culture in America is more intense, with a focus on personal performance and a wide variety of resources. Regardless of these differences, the gym remains an essential part of the fitness world in both countries.
